DARPA Grand Challenge 2005
Recap
DesignJug sponsored Team Juggernaut, whose vehicle Desert Juggernaut
competed as asemifinalist in the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005, which
was held Oct. 8, 2005, in Primm, Nev. Hay bales proved to be the
vehicle’s nemesis and prevented it from finishing the National
Qualification Event (NQE) and competing in the final (for more
information on DARPA or the Grand Challenge 2005, visit DARPA’s Web
site).

DesignJug's Desert Juggernaut competes at the Grand Challenge 2005 National Qualification Event (NQE).

Learning from the NQE
experience, Team Juggernaut returned to the Nevada desert one month
later. Desert Juggernaut completed 63 miles of the Grand Challenge
2005 final course with largely the same system that was used in the
NQE. A mechanical problem halted further distances.
Leveraging
the technology and success from the Grand Challenge 2005, DesignJug
has developed a strap-on autonomy system for optionally unmanned ground or surface systems. The Pronto4™ Strap-on Autonomy System is a
universal retrofit kit that, when installed in less than four hours on any vehicle or vessel, enables optionally unmanned travel. Team
Juggernaut will use the Pronto4™ system in the Urban Challenge 2007, DARPA’s
latest challenge for Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs). For more information on the Pronto4™ system, visit the Kairos Autonomi Web site.
